It's been a good weekend so far, and it's not over yet... we had a really nice thanksgiving; it's dry-ish out, even kinda sunny. My friend Bob came over and helped me fix my water heater. Phfew; $15 instead of at least $150 if I have to call a plumber. I need to learn a lot more about all of this.
But then again... Nancy Ferguson passed away today. She was my housesitter when I went on my road trip, and has house sat for my mom for many years. I find myself both saddened by her passing and pissed off at The News Tribune.
Nancy worked there for 28 years, in the classifieds department. Well, you know what has happened to the classifieds, right? With craigslist, they've been decimated. Okay. Nancy was 65 and pushing retirement about a year ago when this diagnosis came through. She was initially told not to worry about it; had a family leave plan put together that had been approved and then... she was fired. Not let go; no severance; she was fired. For not making quota.
She took action against the TNT and won a settlement, but what a shitty, shitty, shitty thing for the newspaper to do.
So she worked to the limit of her days, and then got no time to enjoy it.
When I was diagnosed with cancer, I told Nancy as proxy for my mother, to practice on her. Nancy took it really calmly, but also said, "oh, can I give you a hug? I want to give you a hug." I was trying to find the words so that mom wouldn't freak out, so that she'd know it was a much better diagnosis than most cancers would be. Nancy walked me through it.
RIP Nancy. We'll all miss you.

Holy crap -- that is HORRIBLE. I wish there were something nasty I could do to the TNT, but I don't live there, and would never buy their newspaper anyway (since I don't buy newspapers).
Yeah, we had a few neighbors who cancelled their subscriptions and wrote letters telling them off. I get that newspapers are feeling the squeeze, but that's just not okay.
