mead nirvana

Can mead nirvana exist in a business park?

Yes, it can.

I got my first tastes of mead in 1995 or so. About 5 years later, while working for Enclume, I came across a sparkling mead called Heidrun and ordered a couple bottles. Later on, when I got married, we had Heidrun mead for our wedding. Yummy. Heidrun is located (for now) in Arcata, CA. As I was traveling through anyway, I arranged to stop in.

Heidrun is located in a nondescript business park - one rather large room housing the whole operation. Gordon was delightful and walked me through the process, and I got to try his current stash of a Montana clover mead, a buckwheat mead, and the orange blossom, which I've had before. I got 6 bottles... two for Krista and David, 4 for me!

The word "honeymoon" apparently was a period of drinking honey (mead) for a month (moon) to ensure fertility and happiness in a marriage. I figure enough of any alcohol can contribute to baby-making...

I can't tell you what I learned, but suffice it to say I'll need to keep my eye on his website soon so I can try out the new flavors. ooooh!

After trying out the mead, I head south on 101. I detour off onto the Avenue of the Giants, which is a 30-mile stretch weaving in and out of the giant redwoods. I stop at one point and it just smells so good. I'll miss being around the trees... they are quite amazing.

I decided to head south to San Francisco - I can stay with a high school classmate, it all works out all right. She won't be home until 6ish, so I stop off in St. Helena en route to get some olive oil. Yum....

Claire and I go to a Burmese restaurant. One dish we have is a yellow lentil dish with a cinnamon/cardamon basmati rice. Man. I have to find the recipe for that rice... it's pretty amazing. Afterwards we adjourn to the Green Apple bookstore. I could easily spend several hours in there, but manage to escape with only two books. I don't buy many books anymore, but if someone gave me a gift certificate to that bookstore, whew I'd have had a good time.

We head back to Claire's apartment and bust out the mead before chatting a while and heading to bed. I always appreciate San Francisco. It's a great city.
